Interpreting Retro

Hey everybody! I started a new project called Interpreting Retro where I draw a picture of how I saw or imagined a retro game from my childhood. My Instagram account is @Phenzy and I hashtag these #interpretingretro. Here are the ones I’ve made so far:

Yay! Dragon Warrior slime!

I know this wasn’t the intention, but this is always what the hero in the original Dragon Warrior looked like to me.

Karpov always looks like he is holding his pants up.

The end heart boss in Contra always looked like Popeye to me.

Little Nemo climbing into animal suits always freaked me out a bit for a game that wasn’t supposed to be creepy.

I always thought the end of the original Zelda was pretty rough when Gannon died and became just a pile of guts.

Cyclops from Castlevania 3: Dracula’s Curse.

Eyeball from Castlevania 2: Simon’s Quest.

Each of these images is available on items over on my Redbubble account.

Life Force

Life Force is one of my all time favorite NES games. I started playing this the other night and I realized I am terrible at it. I was unable to get past the first stage without the Konami code and save states. When I was about 10 years old or so I could beat the entire game with no cheats whatsoever. Video games nowadays are way too easy. Just saying.

Something I drew up for my Tumblr,
I’m gonna be making a couple of prints of these soon, so I’ll post those up as well.

Miller 64 Review

I just picked up a copy of Miller 64, I mean… wait, no I just picked up a case of Miller 64. Ummm… the stuff sucks. If you like your beer to taste like water then this is what you should be drinking. I normally drink craft beers and stuff like Sierra Navada Torpedo and Bells Two Hearted Ale, so light beers in general are never my first choice. I like Michelob Ultra though so I thought I should try this stuff out. Nope, the stuff is absolutely horrible, tastes like nothing, low alcohol content, skip it. Seriously, skip it… its not worth your time even if it sound like something you’d shove into your dusty Nintendo 64 console.

Nintendo (246)

Anyone who visits this blog regularly knows Im into video games. Nintendo is my favorite game company out of all of them out there. I thought this idea up early today and drew it up while watching the movie The Sitter (It was a super funny movie).

Zombie Pikachu

Sketched this out real quick in Photoshop this morning. We are having Easter at our house and I’m trying to stay out of everyone’s hair while they get things ready. ZomPokemon! I never really played much Pokemon, but I always liked the characters a lot.

I’d rather be playing Super Mario World

I sketched this drawing out at work last week. I brought it home over the weekend and threw it into Photoshop to mess around with it. I placed an old canvas I had into the background to get that rough look. I tried to keep the colors/shading limited. I’m pretty happy with how this turned out.
